Ghanaian Highlife musician Nana Asamoah returns with his thought-provoking record “Social Media Konkonsa,” a contemporary Highlife song that turns the familiar culture of gossip, rumours, and online commentary into an engaging musical story.
The song takes inspiration from the Ghanaian expression “konkonsa,” commonly associated with gossip, rumours, and unsolicited commentary. Nana Asamoah uses the concept to reflect on the endless conversations and opinions that have become part of everyday social media life.
“Social Media Konkonsa” forms part of an ambitious five-part project in which Nana Asamoah tells the same central story through Twi, Ga, Ewe, Hausa, and Yoruba. Rather than simply translating the lyrics word for word, each version is adapted to capture the humour, expressions, and storytelling character of its language and audience.
The other versions are titled “Social Media Sabelor” in Ga, “Social Media Sakplito” in Ewe, “Social Media Gulma” in Hausa, and “Social Media Olofofo” in Yoruba. This multilingual approach gives the project a broader West African identity while keeping Nana Asamoah’s Highlife roots at the centre.
Musically, the record combines the storytelling tradition of Ghanaian Highlife with a subject firmly rooted in modern digital culture. Nana Asamoah uses the familiar groove and narrative character of Highlife to address how people communicate, speculate, and share opinions online.
One of the standout qualities of “Social Media Konkonsa” is its cultural relevance. The song takes an everyday phenomenon and transforms it into a musical conversation, allowing listeners to recognise elements of modern social media life while enjoying the warmth and character of Highlife.
The project also demonstrates Nana Asamoah’s interest in using music to connect different African audiences. By presenting one story through five major West African languages, he creates different cultural entry points while maintaining the central idea of the record.
With “Social Media Konkonsa,” Nana Asamoah delivers a creative Highlife record that connects Ghanaian storytelling with contemporary social media culture while opening the conversation to listeners across West Africa.
